JOB DESCRIPTION
Work involves the assembly,
erection, installation and maintenance of all types of
industrial machines and equipment. Includes
presenting installations and moving production equipment
and machines.
Millwrights will gain skills in the
use of a variety of hand and power tools, welding and
brazing of all types of metals, and will learn to use
all types of welding equipment, optic tooling, precision
measuring tools, hoists, and cranes.

9-11 a.m. and 1:00 – 3:00

The Millwrights
qualifying test is given only on the second Tuesday
of the months of January, April, July and October of
each year.
The program
includes 7,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum
of 144 hours of related-instruction, to be attended
one night a week at L.J. Shosten Union Training Center.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be 17 years of age or older.
- Must be a citizen of the US or in the process of
receiving naturalization status.
- Must have a high school diploma or a GED Certificate.
- Must be able to furnish documents verifying that
applicant meets the first three qualifications.
- Be physically able to perform the work of the craft.
HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES
Applicant,
upon meeting above qualifications, will be required
to take the Millwright qualifying test. Any applicant
scoring below 70% will be ruled ineligible, and will
be so notified by mail. Qualified applicants will be
notified on when and where to appear for an oral interview
by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
Each committee member will use the
official rating form for each applicant they interview,
and the average of the individual scores received will
be that applicant's interview score.
The final
score/rating for each applicant will be a composite
of the applicant's score on the Millwright qualifying
test and his/her interview score. The final score/rating
assigned to each applicant will determine his/her position
on the list of eligibles. Applicants will remain on
the list for a period of two (2) years.
Selection of apprentices to be taken during the year
will always be done by taking the candidate with the
highest rating on the list of eligibles and then working
downward in descending order. Applicants can reapply
at any time if they wish to do so.
Tools Needed
Worker is
expected to furnish a set of hand tools; contractors
will provide the larger tools and the power tools that
are necessary for the trade. Initial costs will run
around $400.
Transportation Requirements
Workers must provide their
own transportation.
Hours
Generally, eight (8) hours daily.
Wages
Apprentice starts at 50% of the wage
earned by a journeyperson. He/she will receive a 5%
increase in pay each 500 hours worked up to 3,000 hours.
Thereafter is a 10% increase for each 1,000 hours until
journey-level is reached. Apprentices receive benefits.
Union Dues
There is an initiation fee and monthly membership
dues. Check with the local for the amounts.
