JOB DESCRIPTION

Operating Engineers operate and maintain almost all the engine-powered machines and equipment used in the construction industry. This equipment is used to construct highways, dams, roads, buildings and various other projects. The equipment includes bulldozers, cranes, loaders, scrapers and other related heavy equipment.


Local 49 sponsors the following apprenticeship program:

Applications ONLY accepted on the scheduled days at 9:00 AM.  The Apprenticeship Program is a 4,000-hour program, with at least 144 hours of related training required each 2,000 hours.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or in the process of receiving naturalization (if applicable, applicant must bring documents).
  • Must be a licensed driver with a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
  • The applicant must be physically able to perform all duties of an Apprentice Operating Engineer.

HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES

Once an applicant meets the basic qualifications, he/she must attend an orientation session. Applicants must provide a letter on company stationary from a signatory contractor stating the company’s intent to hire the applicant as an Operating Engineer Apprentice.

This apprenticeship program is 4,000 hours. There is a probationary period of four months. A minimum of 144 hours of related classroom instruction per 2,000 hours worked is required.

Note: Due to the economy and nature of the work apprentices may not be selected every year.

Transportation Requirements

Driver License and car required.

Since this program covers the entire state of Minnesota, workers may be required to travel to where the jobs are, therefore requiring them to find living accommodations away from home for periods of time.

Wages

Percentage of journeyperson wages; varies based on work zones.

Union Dues

Probationary period - 4 months - dues are $120.  The initiation fee is $280 for apprentices. Union dues are $30 each month.
