JOB DESCRIPTION

Screening, floating and troweling of cement surfaces; work on concrete construction (buildings, floors, curbs, sidewalks, highways); laying, spreading and finishing of concrete; setting of curb forms and expansion strips in buildings, sidewalks and driveways; sawing and scoring all concrete; operation of machinery (floats, troweling machines, cement guns, etc.).

Program is a 3-year program that includes:

  • 6,000 hours of on-the-job training.
  • A minimum of 144 hours per year of classes
    • Most of which are at the training center.
    • These can be held during the winter months
    • 1 full week every five weeks
  • A probationary period of 500 working hours.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be a high school graduate, or have a Certificate of Equivalency (GED), and furnish a transcript or certificate at the time of application.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or of Canada.

HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES

Interviews will be conducted when the employment situation warrants placement of apprentices. Applicants shall be notified of the time and location of their interview. The JAC will rank each applicant based on the interview.

Applicants will be placed on a ranked list in descending order according to their score received on the interview.

Each applicant will be notified of his/her final score. All records relating to applicants and apprentices shall be maintained for five years.

Applicants will need to obtain a letter of intent to hire from as sponsoring contractor in order to become an apprentice.

Tools Required

Basic hand tools such as trowels, floats and edgers. Initial costs are about $200.

Transportation Requirements

Worker must provide own transportation.

Hours

Eight (8) hours daily between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Somewhat seasonal averaging about 1,400 hours per year.

Wages

Starting wage for apprentice is 70% of the journeyperson's wage, with a 5% raise for every 1,000 hours worked. Fringe benefits provided.

Union Fees

Initiation fee is $257.50. Union membership dues are $39 each month for apprentices and $1.90 per hour working dues deducted from paycheck.
