JOB DESCRIPTION

Work includes the erection of all types of wooden structures, including form building, framing, inside and outside finishing and installation of all types of hardware. Some examples include the construction of bridge decks; the laying out, cutting and installation of roof framing; building unequal pitch roofs; laying out and building trusses; the use of framing squares; building cornices; the use of roofing materials; welding; the installation of doors, windows, floor, wall and ceiling coverings, mitered and/or coped moldings, prefabricated cabinets and tops, insulation and vapor barriers.

Carpenters use blueprints and specifications to determine types of materials and sizes to be used on the job.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Note: Applicant must be employed or have a sponsor prior to applying for entrance into the apprenticeship program.

Program involves 7,000 hours of on-the-job training in the various areas of carpentry. Apprentices are also required to attend related training sessions for a minimum of 160 hours each year.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 17 years of age or older. Birth Certificate required.
  • Must be a US citizen or in the process of receiving naturalization.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the work of the trade.
  • Must have a high school diploma or certificate of equivalency (GED). Documentation required.
  • Must bring $130 for Union membership/fees

HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES

Those interested in apprenticeship must first be hired by an employer who participates in the Twin Cities Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Committee who will contact the apprenticeship school to sponsor the person into the program.  (A list of participating employers is available at the apprenticeship office.)

If accepted, it is required that each apprentice makes application for membership in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners for one of the locals listed above.

There is no written exam or interview procedure that is required for entrance into the apprenticeship program; the sole criteria is that the person desiring entrance must be employed

Apprentices shall have hiring priority over new applicants.

There is a 60-90 day trial period. During this period, all applicants need to remain employed and current with their training requirements.

Tools Needed

Apprentices are expected to accumulate a basic set of hand tools early in their training. Generally, the total cost of such tools is around $450

Transportation Requirements

Worker is expected to provide own transportation.

Hours

Eight (8) hour days 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM or by union contract.

Wages

Pay is based upon percentages of the journeyperson's hourly rate with progressive advancement every 1,000 hours worked. Apprentice starts with his/her wage at 50% of that of journeyperson's, with a 10% increase after the first 1,000 hours, and a 5% increase after that, until the 7,000 hours has been completed.

Union Dues and Other Fees

Initiation fee is $130 for apprentices and $220 for journeyworkers; Membership dues are $15.
