JOB DESCRIPTION

Laying of bricks; pointing, cleaning, waterproofing and cutting of brick walls; fireproofing; construction of arches; setting of stone trimmings, cutting, laying and pointing of ashlar, rubble, etc.; laying of artificial stone, glass blocks, terra cotta, and insulation; cutting, laying and pointing of cement blocks and glazed tile; erection of precast panels.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Formal applications are accepted on the first Wednesday of each month year-round by appointment only. If a holiday occurs on the first Wednesday, applications will be taken on the following Wednesday. Each applicant will be required to read the Apprenticeship Standards at the time of application.

The apprenticeship program includes 6,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 144 hours per year of related instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 17 years of age or older.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a GED certificate.
  • Must submit a transcript of high school record or GED scores at the time of application.

HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES

The Director of Apprentices will place the names of qualified candidates on the "Active Candidate List." Each qualified candidate will be given a letter of introduction by the Director of Apprentices. Candidates will then be eligible to seek employment.

Once a candidate has found employment, the employer must provide the candidate with a letter stating that the employer will employ/sponsor them as an apprentice. The candidate must present this letter to the Director of Apprentices who will issue the candidate a permit to work.

Tools Needed

Levels, jointers, sled runners, trowels and hammers. Worker is expected to provide his/her own tools. Starting costs run between $250.00 and $300.00.

Transportation Requirements

Worker is expected to have a car. Many job sites are outside of areas where public transportation is available.

Hours

Work hours and other general conditions of employment for apprentices shall be the same as for Journeyworkers. No apprentice will be allowed to work overtime when such work interferes with his/her attendance at related instruction classes unless prior arrangements have been made with the Director of Apprentices.

Wages

Vacation and fringe benefits are included. Starting pay is 50% of Journeyworker's wage, with a 5% raise after the first 1,000 hours (approximately six months) worked, and a 10% raise each 1,000 worked after that.

$200.00 initiation fee.

Monthly membership dues for apprentices are $17.00.
