JOB DESCRIPTION

This job involves troubleshooting, diagnosing, repair, installation, servicing and maintenance of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems found in commercial buildings, hospitals, and supermarkets, industrial and manufacturing plants. This job requires climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, lifting and working in extreme temperature ranges. You may be required to work in high or enclosed spaces, and outside in various weather conditions. Service technicians drive a company supplied vehicle, use tools that are provided by the contractor and may be required to be on call for after work hours and weekend service calls. This job requires good communication skills, a neat appearance and a clean driving record.

Service technicians must have a good understanding of electricity, science, refrigeration, heat transfer, and temperature control. Applicants must successfully complete a two-year day school course in residential and commercial HVAC/R service prior to applying for the service apprenticeship program.  Service apprentices are granted one year of credit towards the five-year program for the completion of the 2 years of HVAC Tech College.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

The apprenticeship program is 8,750 hours of on the job training and a minimum of 1,080 hours of related classroom training in a five-year period.  One year of credit will be granted towards the 5 years of apprenticeship for Service Apprentices with a completion certificate from an approved 2-year technical college in Commercial HVACR.

Applications for the HVACR Service program are accepted January 5, 2008 through January 16, 2008 and for the Construction Pipefitter from November 3, 2008 through November 14, 2008, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at:

Once the applicant meets the initial qualifications, he/she is required to take a Wonderlic Basic Skills Test, which measures verbal and math skills to the 12th grade level. This test is administered by Dunwoody College of Technology. (All applicants will be notified if they passed or failed the exam.)

The program is a total of five (5) years. Apprentices shall attend school typically two (2) nights a week between the months of September and April. He/she must pass all courses with a minimum score of seventy percent (70%) to advance to the next year in the program. Tuition for school is $540.00 per year plus books.

All jobs or referrals are done through Local 539. If you are unemployed, the local union will find you another job.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Construction and Service applicants:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate; documentation must be furnished at time of application
  • If requested, the applicant shall furnish the committee with a written statement from a medical doctor that he/she has had a physical examination in connection with the application, and is physically fit to perform the work of a pipefitter
  • Must achieve a 12th grade level or better on the Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam (form V) and the Wonderlic Basic Skills Tests, as administered by Dunwoody Institute
  • Service applicants must have completed a two-year Technical College day school course in residential and commercial HVAC/R service.
  • Written notices will be furnished to applicants who are found not to meet the basic requirements.

HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES

Those who pass the Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam (form V) and the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test with a 12th grade level or above will be invited to an oral interview with the Joint Apprenticeship Committee where all the applicants will be ranked according to an average score from the interview. Applicants will be given points for trade related experience, post secondary education, etc.

Applicants will then be placed on a list in order of their ranking and pulled off the list in descending order as the jobs become available.

Tools Needed

Tools are provided by the contractor.

Transportation Requirements

It is generally expected that each worker will have his/her own car, a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. The contractor provides a service vehicle for apprentices in the service apprenticeship program.

Hours

Forty (40) hours per week: eight (8) hours daily between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Wages

A first year apprentice starts at 62% of the total wage package paid to journey workers. Apprentices that successfully complete the related classroom training with a minimum score of 70% and work a minimum of 1,750 hours on the job will advance to the next year in apprenticeship program and receive a pay raise.

Union Dues

After eighteen (18) months, there is an initiation fee of $227.00. Membership dues are $0.81 per hour check-off dues plus $19.00 per month for apprentices and $24.00 per month for journey people.
