JOB DESCRIPTION
Includes the
installation, operation, maintenance and repair of all
electrical wiring and electrical equipment used in construction;
the alteration and repair of buildings, structures,
bridges, street and highway work, tunnels, etc.
APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Applications
are accepted semi-annually at the below address, with
quarterly interviews. Deadlines for applications and
requirements to be turned into the Apprenticeship office
are April 1st for a May interview and October1st for
a November interview each year.

Program is
a five- (5) year, night-school program that includes
8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 168 hours per
year of related instruction with a 6-month probationary
period and 48 months of on-the-job training.
Scholarship
Loan agreements are required each year to cover costs
of tuition and books, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a high school graduate or have a Certificate
of Equivalency (GED)
- Must have completed one (1) year of high school
algebra with a passing grade
- Must bring copy of birth certificate
- Must provide official high school transcripts
- Must have a qualifying score on the NJATC Aptitude
Test
- Must submit $20 processing fee upon application
- Must pass a color blindness test
- Must have a valid driver's license
HIRING AND SELECTION
PROCEDURES
All applicants will need to take the
NJATC aptitude test, which is arranged by the apprenticeship
office. Applicants will need to score a 4 or higher
in order to be interviewed by the Joint Apprenticeship
Committee
Those who score
4 or higher will receive notification on when and where
to report for an oral interview before the Joint Apprenticeship
Committee (those who score lower than 4 will be notified
of their ineligibility). The committee shall interview
for eligible apprentices once each year.
Note:
Other determining factors may be (1) the number
of applicants to be taken in by the committee, (2) requests
made by contractors, and (3) when apprentice applicants
can go to work.
Tools Needed
Electrician's
knife, six-foot rule, side cutter pliers, (1) 8"
screwdriver, claw hammer, channel lock or equivalent.
Transportation
Requirements
Worker must provide own transportation.
Hours
Forty (40) hours per week.
Wages
Starts at 40% - 80% of a journeyperson’s
wage, with a raise each period, or 1,000 hours worked
(5% raise
after the first period and 10% raise each period thereafter).
Union
Dues
There is an initiation fee and monthly dues
(Journey level wiremen and other classifications pay
a larger
percentage of gross wages.)
