JOB DESCRIPTION

Includes the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of all electrical wiring and electrical equipment used in construction; the alteration and repair of buildings, structures, bridges, street and highway work, tunnels and so forth

Program involves 8,000 hours/ 5 years of on-the-job training and approximately 200 hours each year of related-instruction offered one full day each week, not paid for day in school.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a high school graduate or the equivalent
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must show evidence of one year of High School algebra with a passing grade of C or higher
  • Must get a qualifying score on Electrical Aptitude test
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES

Applicants will be required to take the NJATC Electrical Aptitude test which is given quarterly.

Those who score a 4 or higher will interviewed by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee. They will be notified by mail regarding the time, date and location of their interview, and those who fail to appear will be ruled ineligible. (Applicants not passing the aptitude test will be given the math and reading comprehension results and will be eligible to retest in six months.)

Prior to reporting for the interview, applicant must provide all transcripts, GED scores and other documentation

Applicant will interview with the Joint Apprenticeship Committee (made up of 4 representatives from the union and 4 from management.) Applicants will then be scored and ranked according to a composite score of their high school record, technical college record, and oral interview. Applicants will then be placed into a pool of eligible candidates ranked highest to lowest

As jobs become available, apprentices will be taken from the list of eligibles. As apprentices are needed, the apprenticeship director contacts those on the eligible list, starting with the highest ranking number. All eligible applicants will remain on the list for two (2) years from date of interview, unless they choose to be removed.

Tools Needed

8 or 9 inch lineman pliers, 2 pairs adjustable pliers (channel lock), 4-inch screwdriver (blade size), 6-inch screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, 6 foot folding-wood rule, electricians knife, hammer, tool pouch, torpedo level, hacksaws 6 inch needlenose pliers, flashlight.

Transportation Requirements

Worker must provide own transportation.

Hours

Eight (8) hours daily between 7:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

Wages

For 2007 the starting wage is $12.20 per hour for beginning apprentices with no experience, and raises every 12 months of work, up to $27.39. These rates change annually at contract time in May.

Union Dues

The initiation fee for an apprentice is approximately $150.00, 1/2 due at start or program, and the other 1/2 due when you become a journeyman. The membership dues are approximately $66.00 per quarter, and working dues are 3% of a worker's gross pay.
