JOB DESCRIPTION
Includes the installation, operation,
maintenance and repair of all electrical wiring and
electrical equipment used in construction; the alteration
and repair of buildings, structures, bridges, street
and highway work, tunnels and so forth.
APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Applications
accepted at the following address until December 28
of each year with a $20 application fee to be paid at
time of application. Interviews are held once per year,
usually in the Spring.

All materials must be in the Apprenticeship Office by
the last Friday in January to be considered for an interview
Program is
a five (5) year night school program that includes 8,000
hours of on-the-job training and 168 hours per year
of related-instruction with a 6-month probationary period.
48 months is on-the-job training. School location is
the Lake Superior College in Duluth, or Central Lakes
College in Brainerd for the Brainerd apprentices.
Scholarship loan agreements are available each year
to cover costs of tuition and books.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a high school graduate or have a Certificate
of Equivalency (GED)
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must have completed one (1) year of high school
algebra with a passing grade
- Must bring copy of birth certificate
- Must provide official high school transcripts
- Must have a qualifying score on the NJATC Aptitude
Test
- Must submit $20 processing fee upon application
- Must pass a color blindness test
- Must have a valid driver's license
HIRING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES
All applicants will need
to take the NJATC aptitude test, which is arranged
by the apprenticeship office. Applicants
will need to score a 4 or higher in order to be interviewed
by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee
Those who score 4 or higher will receive
notification on when and where to report for an oral
interview before the Joint Apprenticeship Committee
(those who score lower than 4 will be notified of their
ineligibility). The committee shall interview for eligible
apprentices once each year.
Note: Other determining factors may be
(1) the number of applicants to be taken in by the committee,
(2) requests
made by contractors, and (3) when apprentice applicants
can go to work.
Tools Needed
Electrician's
knife; pencil; six-foot rule, cutting pliers/ Linesman;
diagonal; longnose (7" Klein or equal); two pair
of channel lock pliers; screwdrivers: 3/16X4",
1/4X8", Phillips 6"; hammer; center punch;
hacksaw frame; level (small); plumbob; square; voltage
tester (Wiggins-type up to 600 volts); wrenches (10"
crescent), T&B crimper or equal and Allen wrench
set 0-1/4"; current code book.
Transportation Requirements
Worker must provide own transportation.
Hours
Forty (40) hours per week.
Wages
45% - 85% of a journeyperson's wage plus union benefits,
with a raise each period or 1,000 hours worked, about
10% raise given every year worked.
Union Dues
There is an initiation fee and monthly dues
(Journey level wiremen and other classifications pay
a larger percentage
of gross wages.)
