JOB DESCRIPTION

Installation of hard ceramic tile.

Applicants must first be hired by one of the signatory contractors. After working 7 days, he/she will be required to join the union.

Workers start out as finishers, and work at finishers’ level for two (2) to four (4) years before starting the tile layers apprenticeship program.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Each contractor is allowed four (4) apprentices at any one time. When a contractor has space for an apprentice, an employed finisher will officially begin a 6,000 hour/3 year program of on-the-job training and will attend night school one (1) night each week at St. Paul Technical College for two (2) years.

Tools Needed

Contractors provide workers with most tools; finishers, at least, do not need to provide their own tools.

Transportation Requirements

Sites of jobs vary; workers need to provide their own transportation.

Hours

Generally from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM each day, Monday through Friday.

Wages

Once workers join the union, they will make $8 per hour. For three (3) years, they will receive raises each 500 hours worked (ie. after the first 500 hours, they will receive a raise of $.80 per hour). By the end of the third year, finishers earn $15.75 per hour. Journey-level finishers make $21.05 per hour and journey-level tile layers earn $23.85 per hour.

Union Dues

Initiation fee for all members is $200. This is not expected to be paid all at once, rather it can be paid in installments. Monthly membership dues are $17.
